bio

Terry McCarty was born on July 31, 1959 in Electra, Texas. He moved to Southern California in 1988. From 1988 to 1997, he worked as a background actor and occasional stand-in for actors including Joe Pesci (The Public Eye, Lethal Weapon 3, and Jimmy Hollywood) and Wallace Shawn (House Arrest).
Terry began writing poetry in the summer of 1997. From 1998 to 1999, he was a member of the Midnight Special Bookstore poetry workshop in Santa Monica. He has been a featured poet in several Southern California venues. In 2005, Terry embarked on a brief poetry tour of Northern California's Bay Area and Las Vegas, Nevada.
Terry has also appeared in Lynda and Lisa LaRose's The Poetry Spiral at Luna Sol Cafe (Los Angeles), Roni Walter's Bakstreet Cometri at the Comedy Store (West Hollywood) and the Austin International Poetry Festival (Austin, TX).
Terry McCarty is the author of several chapbooks containing poems which blend humor with occasional social and/or political commentary: Hollywood Poetry, Use Your Delusion, Wichita Falls, Love Poems, The Green Album, Adjustment Disorder and two volumes of Greatest Hits. A chapbook of new poems, Unfabulous, will appear in early 2007.
He has also released two spoken-word CDs: The Best of Terry McCarty Vol. 1 (produced by Jimmy Smith) and Volume 2 (produced by Tish Eastman).
In addition, Terry's poem "Icarus's Itinerary" can be found in Tebot Bach's 2003 anthology of California poetry So Luminous The Wildflowers (for sale through Amazon.com).

Dear Blogger

You’re more like me than you’ll admit.

You think in circles:
love won’t come for me again
so it’s time to hookup with oh-so-wrong men
for dinners in Silverlake where they never let you speak
plus bad sex in ancient Hollywood apartments,
feeling pain when they leave
so it’s back to worrying about love
only being in the past.

I think in circles too:
love won’t come for me again
so I stay away from opportunities
to meet, greet, talk, listen-
and feel pain when the women
who express interest in me leave
because I don’t want to risk being hurt
so it’s back to worrying about love
only being in the past.

Will we ever change?
