"My name is David Andrew Concepcion. The name means “Beloved Strong Idea.” Obviously it’s the perfect name for any artist, but especially a writer.
Art has always been a part of my life. I’ve been drawing seriously ever since the age of four, with an eye towards becoming a cartoonist like my idol Charles Schultz. While trying to become cartoonist/comic illustrator at the High School of Art & Design, I joined their comic book club. There I saw someone doing a rough sketch better than any of my finished art. When the club president asked “who here is a writer?” I raised my hand immediately. This was truly the start of my writing career.
I went on to receive a BA in film production from Hunter College, graduating Cum Laude and departmental honors. I was accepted into Boston University’s Masters degree program in screenwriting. Under the guidance of program director Stephen Geller, I wrote two full-length screenplays—one original and one adaptation. The original screenplay, “Generocity” was one of the six finalists/winners of the 1996 Scenario Magazine Screenwriting contest, whose entrants come from every film program—graduate and undergraduate—in the United States. “Generocity” was also accepted into the IFP's (Independent Feature Project) Independent Feature Film Market in 1998. I have completed nine other full-length screenplays. I have taught screenwriting courses at Boston University, Emerson College, the Newton Adult Education Center, and the Grub Street Writers.
Since the year 2000, I have worked at WGBH-TV—the largest public broadcasting station in the U.S.—where I am a coordinator of real-time closed captioning for national news and other television programs."

Pack a box marked
Fragile: Handle with Care
Methodically dividing
Our personal effects.
Long, thin strips of packing tape
Holding it all inside.
All collections divided
Almost neatly in two
I take the Alanis Morrisette CD,
You keep Sarah McLaughlin.
Please leave me the painting,
Because it reminds me of you.
Please take the photographs,
Because they remind me of you.
I take my clothes out of your dresser.
Separate from yours
And place them in a long black suitcase
Ready to depart.
Put into a box marked Miscellaneous
A labrynth keychain, unused
A leather wallet, worn and weathered
A rubber duck bottle opener, scratched
A gold crucifix, slightly chipped
A work ID, expired
A Japanese caligraph for “Love”
Carved in a stone, a simple paperweight
I close the lid on these
Jumbled manageries
Misplaced memories
And tape it shut.
The last package gone,
The room feels lighter than before
Sunlight illuminated the newly open spaces.
You walk me to the door
Your lips part in a friendly smile
Your eyes remain still and unmoved.
You offer a concilliatory hug,
I take from it much more.
A final look at the room
With a wish that it was the first.
As you disappear
Around the corner
To go about your day,
I place the keys on the nightstand
And try,
Unsuccessfully,
To leave quietly.
