I Gathered it All... |
I gathered it all in pairs:
Two water-glasses, two table-spoons,
Two snowy, fluffy pillows,
Two soup plates, two dinner dishes,
Chrystal goblets, Sevres porcelains,
Always two of everything.
I filled up the cupboards, the pantries, the days,
Carefully, bashfully,
Year after year, instant to instant,
I lived with two twin images in mind,
I breathed two silences, I cried two tears,
—one for you—
I adored symmetry…
Just one thing is missing—
You,
The one who should have turned up at dawn,
When the pale moon rouses the lark
Gently, from its sleep.
