My friend's thin father
wore a tie with his cardigan
owned an asbestos factory
when we met, he said
"I didn't know."
I didn't understand
he said he'd owned an asbestos factory
and cried,
"I didn't know."
No one blamed him or yes they did
an investigation held
he was absolved, innocent under the law
he really didn't know
yet he died shortly afterwards
from heartbreak and bleeding ulcers
thin well-dressed man
leaving me to repeat
"He didn't know."
